Democratic voting to rate the articles in surgical journals

Monday, December 25th, 2006

There are lot of surgical journals and lots of material being published but surgeons only have limited time to read all of them. I feel in the limited time they need to read the quality information. But how to find the quality in the thousands of the journals available. I got an Idea they can be voted or rated by the individual people reading the website, and so good articles get more votes and people can see them. Journal Digest in EYST is designed in this way. Initially the EYST journal digest was planned as an aggregator of all latest surgical journals with out the voting bit, but upon seeing Digg and Pligg website I thought this is the way forward. So I set up them with voting. I feel that this will be useful to surgeons, who don’t have a lot of spare time.

Recently there is a news about new strain of MRSA killing people. It is Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL) strain of MRSA

From BBC
Two people have died in the outbreak at the Stoke-on-Trent hospital from the Panton-Valentine Leukocidin (PVL) strain of the bug.

But what is this strain

BMJ
Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) is one of many toxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus. Structurally similar to {gamma} haemolysin, this leukocidin comprises two subunits (F and S) that together are leukocidal and dermonecrotic.1 Intermixing of {gamma} haemolysin and the subunits of PVL produces toxin molecules with varying cellular affinities and destructive capability, even when the staphylococci may be otherwise sensitive to antibiotics such as methicillin.

Journal of Clinical Investigation
Panton-Valentine leukocidin (PVL) is a pore-forming toxin secreted by Staphylococcus aureus that has recently been associated with necrotizing pneumonia

Ban of Trans fats in New York Restaurants

Tuesday, December 5th, 2006

There is an interesting news article in Chron.com which says about ban of trans fat in New York Restaurants. It says

The Board of Health, which passed the ban unanimously, did give restaurants a minor break by relaxing the proposed deadline. Restaurants will now be barred from using most frying oils containing trans fats by July 2007 and will have another year to eliminate trans fats from all foods.

from Chron.com

This is a welcoming move for people of New York. They now have a policy saying they have a right for healthy food. In long run this will show good results

The policy may be bit unwelcome by the restaurants.
