Interesting that they have changed their stance on this. I just hope that the testing is thorough as this can be detrimental, and not to be taken lightly. this is peoples lives we are talking about.

I came to this country from Europe 26 years ago. I gave my blood and platelets on a regular basis - like I used to before in my home country - until one day, someone decide that anyone coming to the US after 1979 was banned from giving blood. Just wondering what they did with my blood all those years before they knew what a threat to humanity I was.

When I was fourteen I caught "infectious hepatitis" from a neighbor woman, mother of a friend, who we thought just had the flu. That was a miserable summer! Several days in the hospital and all summer recovering. My mother, who was an R.N., and uncles, who were doctors, impressed on me that for the rest of my life I was never, ever to donate blood. This was no small thing in our extended family and later in my adult children's lives. We're a healthy clan and members regularly donate blood.
