I gave my blood and platelets on a regular basis - like I used to before in my home country - until one day, someone decide that anyone coming to the US after 1979 was banned from giving blood. That was a miserable summer! Several days in the hospital and all summer recovering. My mother, who was an R.N., and uncles, who were doctors, impressed on me that for the rest of my life I was never, ever to donate blood. This was no small thing in our extended family and later in my adult children's lives. We're a healthy clan and members regularly donate blood.
