Genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s disease – CALHM1
Thursday, June 26th, 2008The newly discovered gene called calcium homeostasis modulator 1 (CALHM1), protein produced from the gene acts as Calcium channel. Research evidence shows that different variants of the gene also influence the levels of amyloid-ß peptides. The risk gene leads to a partial loss of function, which means that less calcium gets into the cell and it weakens the signals normally regulated by calcium. The researchers determined that one of these signals controls the levels of amyloid peptides, the building blocks of the characteristic senile plaques.
Researchers at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research and Albert Einstein College of Medicine found, a variant of CALHM1 is found more frequently in people with Alzheimer’s disease than in those without. They estimate that a single copy of that variant, which results in a proline-to-leucine amino acid substitution (designated as p86L because it occurs at codon 86), increases one’s chance of getting late-onset Alzheimer’s disease by 1.44-fold.
Other genitic risk factors identified for late-onset Alzheimer’s is Apo-E4. Just one copy of this gene variant triples the risk of the disease.

Cuba approves Lung cancer vaccine CimaVax EGF
Tuesday, June 24th, 2008Cuban scientists said on Tuesday the first vaccine to extend lives of lung cancer patients has been approved by Cuban authorities for use and is available in the island’s hospitals.
The drug, CimaVax EGF, has been shown to increase survival rates on average four to five months and much longer in some patients, they said in a news conference at Cuba’s Center of Molecular Immunology.

Crop circles – pi

Wroughton Mathematicians are perplexed after a highly complex crop circle appeared in a Wiltshire field - depicting a fundamental mathematical symbol.
The circle is, apparently, a coded image representing a complex mathematical number — the first ten digits of pi — and even astrophysicists admit they find it “mind-boggling”.
The circular pattern was created in a barley field near Barbury Castle, an Iron Age hill fort, earlier this month.
Customising Pligg tag results
Thursday, June 19th, 2008With normal installation of Pligg whenever you click tag, results you get are oldest articles at first. Which is not one would be expecting when they click. This is been very problematic at my websites medical news and obama news. So I tried to find a way to sort the problem. I did thourough search at Pligg forums and found following solution by savant.
