New Breast Cancer Screening (mammogram) guidelines in USA

Monday, November 16th, 2009

New mammogram guidelines are released in USA which specify that there is no need to screen women in their 40s. Guidelines also suggest screening once every two years in between ages 50 to 74.

News from Reuters

Sweeping new U.S. breast cancer guidelines released on Monday recommend against routine mammograms for women in their 40s, and suggest women 50 to 74 only get a mammogram every other year.

The new guidelines by the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, an influential panel of independent experts, would sharply curtail the number of breast mammograms done in the United States, sparing women the worry of false alarms and the cost and trouble of extra tests.

But U.S. cancer experts say the altered schedule may mean more women will die from breast cancer.

Significant amounts of H2O (water) on moon

I have previously written about Indian’s chandrayaan mission found water in moon. Recently NASA’s lunar crater mission found significant amounts of water that might help with moon bases.

More informations as per NASA website
The team took the known near infrared spectral signatures of water and other materials and compared them to the spectra collected by the LCROSS near infrared spectrometer of the impact.

“We were only able to match the spectra from LCROSS data when we inserted the spectra for water,” said Colaprete. “No other reasonable combination of other compounds that we tried matched the observations. The possibility of contamination from the Centaur also was ruled out.”

Additional confirmation came from an emission in the ultraviolet spectrum that was attributed to hydroxyl, one product from the break-up of water by sunlight. When atoms and molecules are excited, they release energy at specific wavelengths that are detected by the spectrometers. A similar process is used in neon signs. When electrified, a specific gas will produce a distinct color. The ultraviolet visible spectrometer detected hydroxyl signatures just after impact that are consistent with a water vapor cloud in sunlight.

First iPhone virus

Monday, November 9th, 2009

New news about first virus affecting iPhone mostly jailbroken or cracked phones.

News from Yahoo

The virus, which so far appears to be confined to Australia, changes the users wallpaper to an image of 1980s pop star Rick Astley, and displays the message Ikee is never gonna give you up.

Only those users who have cracked, or jailbroken, their phones and not changed their passwords from the default “alpine” can be affected.

Security firm Sophos said that once in place, the worm attempts to find other iPhones on the mobile phone network that are similarly vulnerable, and installs itself on them.

2005 infant mortality rates

Wednesday, November 4th, 2009

Article in Centers for Disease control and prevention comparing reporting how infant mortality rate is reported in various countries and why USA ranks 30th.

Some key information from the papers

Data from the United States’ Linked Birth/Infant Death Data Set and the European Perinatal Health Report

  • Infant mortality rates for preterm (less than 37 weeks of gestation) infants are lower in the United States than in most European countries; however, infant mortality rates for infants born at 37 weeks of gestation or more are higher in the United States than in most European countries.
  • One in 8 births in the United States were born preterm, compared with 1 in 18 births in Ireland and Finland.
  • If the United States had Sweden’s distribution of births by gestational age, nearly 8,000 infant deaths would be averted each year and the U.S. infant mortality rate would be one-third lower.
  • The main cause of the United States’ high infant mortality rate when compared with Europe is the very high percentage of preterm births in the United States.
